Beware of Media's Negative Influence?
Yahweh designed us to be fulfilled and satisfied beyond our wildest dreams. We were made for a purpose and in carrying out that purpose we would live happy and content lives. All we need to do is believe and follow Him, not only as individuals, but nations too.
If only we would administer and follow His perfect laws, we would find what we were looking for. True peace, happiness, health, general wellbeing, justice, freedom, liberty and prosperity would be ours. As a result we could be free from all insecurities, fears and worries of life. Free from unhappiness, sickness, disease, poverty and want.
Of course, the reality is we have not believed Yahweh or followed His ways which would bring us what we have always longed for. Instead, we have rejected His perfect laws, wisdom and direction from the beginning. We have rejected the God who created us and knows us best and promised that the “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Cor 2:9) Rather, we have trusted in our own understanding and ‘followed our own hearts’, even though the bible warns, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer 17:9)
Despite reaping an ever-increasing harvest of suffering, sorrow, war, brokenness, sickness and death, culminating in the full tide of unprecedented misrule, greed, selfishness and immorality that we see today, man refuses to repent of his sinful and selfish ways. With pride he continues to think he knows better than his own Creator and therefore will not acknowledge that Yahweh’s ways are better than our own. Sadly, we have put pleasure, self-interest and material gain before all else and each other.
God foresaw our times and inspired Timothy to write “in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, high minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;” (2 Tim 3:1-4)
Should we really be surprised when one considers what we are continuously being taught, whether it be in our schools, universities or media? Apparently, we are little more than animals. Mere accidents of nature and therefore without meaning or purpose! What about our long held concept of right and wrong? Since those in power don’t believe God, they have tossed this out the window too and replaced it with ‘relative morality’. If there are no absolute ‘rights or wrongs’ then we are free to do as we please to others as long as it makes us happy. Of course, in return we must then tolerate other’s behaviours even when we or our loved ones are being hurt as we continue our race to the bottom.
With no moral compass to guide us, maybe our role models will offer us some guidance? As if power, fame, wealth and outward looks were the greatest of all virtues. What about the messages and images we feed our hearts and minds every day. Will our daily diet of sin, lust, violence, selfishness and misinformation help us? All dished up through television, internet, social media, movies, music and the like. Always pushing the boundaries of decency! Conditioning us to believe what we see and hear is how ‘normal people’ think, live and act and if we want to fit in and be accepted, then their ideals, attitudes and values should become ours too. Of course, in their imagined world all families are dysfunctional; everyone is having an affair; any actual decent normal person, especially fathers are made to look like fools; all Christians are hippocrates and every second person is gay! Is there really any surprise that society and we along with it have fallen so far?
Take homosexuality as an example. 10 to 20 years ago it was illegal in most countries and anyone who dared advertise their sexuality was shunned by all in society. Now they are lauded as our role models and the outcasts today are anyone who might raise a voice in opposition! Have we really become more enlightened and accepting? Or have we simply been conditioned to accept this unnatural behaviour after being subjected to decades of TV shows designed to normalise and promote this behaviour.
US Vice President Joe Biden thinks so and “…lauded the influence of Judaism on the United States, specifically mentioning the efforts of Jews on gay rights issues…” Biden pointed to American television sitcom Will and Grace - whose protagonists are a gay lawyer and his Jewish best friend - alongside social media, as examples of game-changing factors in the battle for gay marriage rights. "That’s what changed peoples’ attitudes," Politico quoted him as saying. "That’s why I was so certain that the vast majority of people would... rapidly embrace gay marriage." (Jerusalem Post, 22 May 2013)
Vladimir Lenin also understood the importance of controlling our media and entertainment industries because of its power of influence and has been accredited with saying "Corrupt the young, get them away from religion. Get them interested in sex. Make them superficial, destroy their ruggedness. Get control of all means of publicity and thereby: Get the peoples' mind off their government by focusing their attention on athletics, sexy books and plays, and other trivialities. Divide the people into hostile groups by constantly harping on controversial matters of no importance. Destroy the people's faith in their natural leaders by holding up the latter to ridicule, contempt and obloquy. Always preach true democracy but seize power as fast and as ruthlessly as possible…By specious argument cause the breakdown of the old moral virtues: honesty, sobriety, continence, faith in the pledged word, ruggedness. Cause the registration of all firearms on some pretext, with the view of confiscating them and leaving the population defenceless." “Destroy the family, you destroy the country.”
Stalin surely shared Lenin’s insights and continued with his plan to destroy us in the West from within saying "America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."
When one considers the development of the media and entertainment industries over the past century with the subsequent decline in patriotism, morality, family and spiritual life, it’s not difficult to see that those in power have certainly used these mediums to condition and control us just as we were warned. While we may not have Communist governments in the West, we all certainly have Socialist ones to varying degrees and as Lenin further wrote "The goal of socialism is communism."
It is time we woke up and realised what we watch, read and listen to is not just harmless entertainment! As Nicholas Johnson, a former US Federal Communications Commissioner put it “All television is educational television. The question is: what is it teaching?” You see, it does have a tremendous influence on us whether we realise it or not and those in charge of it do not have our best interests at heart. It is certainly very likely why we have become the way we are as individuals and a society and our path to true happiness and contentment has been lost.
Of course, this is nothing new. Even 2300 years ago, Aristotle, the Greek philosopher wrote “If one listens to the wrong kind of music, he will become the wrong kind of person.”
Job understood the importance of this and wrote “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.” (Ps 101:3) We too, must learn to guard our hearts and minds and stop offering them up to those who care nothing for us, our families or our society. Instead “…whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Phil 4:8)
The question is, what will you do? Are you ready to wake up and stop following the other sheep who are quickly marching to their own slaughter? To stop watching and listening to all those around you who care little or nothing for you. Are you ready to repent and believe the one who created us? The one who loves us and knows us best.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares Yahweh, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jer 29:11 -13)
Whatever your beginnings, your past failures, your current situation, He has a plan and purpose for your life “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37) however, we must first “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:14-15) Why? Because we are all sinners and this is the only way we can receive forgiveness, purpose and eternal life.
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one...” (Rom 3:10) “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23) “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way” (Isa 53:6) and as a result “your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you…” (Isa 59:2)
There is no other way! “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Yahshua our Lord” (Rom 6:23) who said “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) However, "…unless you repent you will all likewise perish." (Luke 13:3)
The question is, will we “repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance”? (Acts 26:20) This requires much more than a simple confession of faith in the person of Yahshua. It requires we believe Him enough to do what He says.
Sure, it will not be easy, but nor will it be “…too difficult for you or beyond your reach…No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it….See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love Yahweh your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and Yahweh your God will bless you” (Deut 30:11-20)
With “life and prosperity, death and destruction” set before us, what will you choose?
Call on Him today and seek Him with all your heart and He will “prosper you”, “give you hope and a future”. For you are part of Yahweh’s great plan and purpose. Indeed you are! There is surely a place for you, a place of no small importance in His Kingdom. You are an integral part of it, provided you are in right relationship with Him. This relationship made possible through the sacrifice of His Son Yahshua upon the Cross. You may take your place in His plan and possess everlasting life here and now for “as many as received him, to them gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name" (John 1:12)
