We Must Overcome and Press on Toward the Prize
The Reason and Purpose for Living
Whenever God requires anything of man, there is always a reason for it. The reason why so many fail is because they are unable to see God’s purpose and therefore have no incentive to seek the great heights in Him. We have been too taken up with childish theories about heaven and mansions in the sky to see the true purpose of God. God’s plan for man is to make him true Lord of the universe and bring all things into subjection to Him (Heb 2:5-8.) Through sufferings, tribulations, sickness, death and trials of life, we are to eventually become fit and equipped for the rulership which God ordained from the beginning (Gen 1:26). Only when we see this instead of fairy tales will we have some incentive to partake of the glorious son-ship of God!
The Importance of Overcoming
Now, would it not make sense if God is preparing man to reign over His creation, that man must be prepared for this rulership? Would He put a man to be ruler of the world if the world continuously overcame him? No, only a man who has overcome the world could rule the world! “Know ye not that ye shall judge angels?” Could we imagine God setting someone up to judge Satan and the fallen angels who has continuously been overcome by them? Can one judge sin, if they have always been overcome by sin themselves? No, he who is to “rule all things must first of all have overcome all things”.
No Christian is ever going to become an overcomer simply following the normal course of church activity. There is something about the continual vain repetitions of church that keeps us in a state of spiritual infancy. When Israel’s offerings and sacrifices got to be nothing more than a ritual performed each week, God rejected them. What more is there to our wearisome repetitions? No, we must all come to know God personally, individually and independently of all theories and traditions.
If only Christians would stop believing they have been born again and received the grand prize the moment they believe. This doctrine taught in most churches has been an enormous hindrance in the progress of Christians. For in thinking they have reached son-ship, they fail to press on toward the mark of full son-ship in Him. For God said ‘that which is born of God cannot sin, for His seed remaineth in Him and he cannot sin because he is born of God.” (1 John 3:9). When considering this, they would not be in a hurry to declare they are born again and full sons of God. There is a world of difference between being justified by faith and being born again. The truth is, we are in the process of becoming sons of God (1 John 3:2-3) and are to sin less and less until we sin no more!
“The hour is come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone, but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” (John 12:20-24). In other words, we must wait until Jesus comes again to see the complete Jesus (the end of harvest time) when the single corn of wheat that fell to the ground and died would grow to become a whole ear of wheat full of kernels, each in the exact image as the one who fell to the ground and died but rose again. This is Christ with His vast family of sons made in His image.
The Need to Press on Toward the Prize
In Revelation we are told of 2 classes of Christian. Those who overcome and those who do not, with the overcomers made many specific promises as can be found in Rev 2:7, 11,17,26-28 and Rev 3:12,13 and 21.
A person becomes an overcomer when he becomes a lover of the will of God and a hater of the world. Christ always did the things which pleased the father. No one will ever become an overcomer until Christ within, becomes greater and more important than the world. For most, the world will continue to be greater than Christ. However, the reality is the world and all within it is but vanity, temporary and fading away. It is not worth it! (1 John 2:15-17)
Self-satisfaction is a deceiving evil. A man who thinks himself righteous will never seek righteousness, but a man who knows he is unrighteous will seek Christ. It is the same for the fullness of the Spirit. It is a shame so many Christians think they have received the fullness of the spirit when so many lives show very little of it! Let us realise we have experienced a little fimble of water compared to God’s great ocean. The rivers of living water (God’s spirit) can only flow as we empty ourselves of all sin and self-righteousness and submit ourselves to God. Look to Jesus as the example, for He had the fullness God’s spirit (miracles, wisdom, love and words of knowledge etc) and was therefore unlike anyone else.
The fullness of the Spirit should not be associated with the power of service only i.e preaching and healing etc, but the purifying work also. Let us remember 2 Peter 1:5-8, 10 and 11 in which we are encouraged to add to our faith virtue and to our virtue knowledge etc.
It’s time to stop, look, listen and take stock. Is our search for gold stopping our progress towards the kingdom of God? The fullness of God is not going to be attained by merely reading the Bible or watching others serve. We must have a heart-absorbing and soul consuming quest. ‘Forgetting the things which are behind and reaching forth unto the things that are before, I press towards the mark for the prize of high calling of God in Christ Jesus” and ‘let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God’ (Heb 6:1).
Maturity is never attained by endless circles or remaining as you are, but by change where every day is a new horizon with new challenges to overcome. If we want to be like Jesus, we must understand He only did what pleased His father and do the same. See John 5:36; John 8:28, 38, 29; John 10:25 and Luke 10:21.
Counting the Cost
He sent Abraham into an unknown land to live in tents. Joseph into slavery and imprisonment. Daniel into slavery and the lions’ den and Jeremiah into muddy wells and 40 years of rejection. All to bring them to son-ship. “These lights afflitciton which are but for a moment are working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”
Son-ship cannot be attained lightly or with ease. No, the only path which leads to son-ship is the path of suffering, loneliness, temptation, despair, trials, tribulations, misunderstanding, rejection and pain. It is unavoidable. Jesus says, ”If any man would follow me, let him deny himself and take up the cross and follow me.”
This is the opposite to the modern day preacher who proclaims abundance for all; freedom from all sickness, pain and poverty. This is simply an appeal to the flesh. Rather, there is nothing like suffering to bring the world and our own flesh into proper prospective. Suffering helps us understand things as they really are. By suffering, we see the worthlessness of all passing vanities.
Jesus Must be Lord of Our Lives
The only hope of son-ship is for Jesus to dwell in us, control and order every step of our lives. “As many as are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” Son-ship is not what we are, but what Jesus is and what He is in us (John 5:18-32; 5:19 and 5:30). Both the words and works of Jesus were the words and works of God (John 14:10). Those who saw Jesus also saw the Father. When Jesus is in control of one’s life, then and only then does one see Jesus in us.
If we are to be holy, we must not try to be holy. Christ is holy so let Him live in you. If you long for righteousness, do not try to be righteous. Christ is righteous, therefore let Him live in you. It is our relationship to Him that counts, not whether we attend church etc.
The Fear of God is the Beginning of All Wisdom
We should approach God with a sense of reverence. For the fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom and understanding. We know nothing yet as we ought to know. It is much better to listen than to speak in God’s presence. If we are more anxious to hear God’s voice than hear our own, we will know God’s purpose. We have spent too much time boldly arguing our own causes, but too little time at his feet disowning our own wisdom, knowledge and emptying ourselves of vain traditions and not repenting of our own vain doctrines taught by man.
We need to learn that God is God. He is Almighty. All power and authority belongs to Him. All things were made by Him and for Him. All things exist and consist by His power. Whether they are thrones, dominions or principalities in heaven or on earth. They were created by Him as part of His purpose. Nothing can breathe or exist a second without Him. Nothing has power that He has not given. Even Satan is powerless to do anything except that which God allows according to His purpose.
God is wise. Nothing has unknowingly or mistakenly sneaked into His purpose that he Himself did not plan. No mistakes have been made in Eden. Every detail was planned as part of His eternal purpose. “The creature was made subject to vanity; not willingly, but by reason of Him who hath subjected the same in hope.” There were no afterthoughts of Calvary. All were planned before the foundation of the world. No enemy is hindering His purpose, but all things are working together to advance His plan.
God leaves nothing to chance. It was not chance that Joseph was sold into slavery. It was purpose. It was not chance that Paul got shipwrecked on the island of Malta. It was purpose. And God has a purpose for our lives if we listen and obey!
The Need for Change
Whether you change your mind a little or a lot, remember change is not a sign of stupidity or weakness, but a sign of growth and strength. Think of those who did not want to stop believing the earth was flat, but held on to this belief even after they began to look increasingly foolish.
For years, we have been taught that the hope of the church is to be raptured out of the world to escape the tribulation. Although I went along with this belief when I was younger, I can’t help but think that most of this hope for a ‘secret’ rapture was built upon man’s desire to escape suffering and tribulation. Forgetting that it is through much tribulation that we will enter the Kingdom of God. The sons of God are not to be raptured out of it, but to walk victoriously through it where they will be thrown into the fire, but walk unharmed as Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did in the flames. They will not be eaten by the lions, but stand as Daniel did, unscathed. They will not thirst, but drink as Elijah did of living waters. God must and will finish His work.
Beware of the Deception
There is a strong delusion settling upon the earth, born of Satan, that makes wrong look right and right look wrong. Doesn’t 2 Thes 2:8-12 perfectly describe the Church today? If you think the majority of the professing church of our day loves the truth, then the delusion has already overtaken you. The Jews of Christ’s day did not love the truth. That is why they rejected Christ. They instead loved tradition, form and ceremony. Their priests did not love the truth. They instead loved to be admired by men; to wear long robes and make long prayers in public places; to be seen and heard of men. The Catholic Church was no different and so it is with the Protestant church in these last days.
There are many Christians today who don’t love the truth. They rather love their programs, buildings, traditions and pet doctrines. They love their songs, happy feelings, social gatherings and favourite preachers which make them feel good, while rejecting anything which crucifies the old nature and life. Show them what flesh really is and they reject you. Tell them what it means to walk by the spirit and they cast you out. It is human nature not to love the truth and rebel against it (Isaiah 66). Men hate the truth because it disturbs them, and brings us all under conviction. It demands action and repentance.
While so many have focused on the ‘rapture’ we have completely forgotten Jesus’ parables of the good and bad fish caught in the same net. The wheat and the tares being sifted together to be separated. The sheep and goats which roam in the same pasture. The church today is in a bad state. There is worship of the saints, heroes and idolaters, not only occurs in the pews, but pulpits too as preachers covet large congregations, money, prestige and worldly goods. Full of members who go to church on Sunday, who sing songs, listen to a sermon and give offerings out of tradition rather than out of a true heart and love for God.
We Must Set our Hearts and Minds on Him
Those who have the father’s name on their forehead have His mind and share his purposes. “I and the father are one” (Phil 2:5). The carnal mind is only interested in the physical and is an enemy of God. This is why so many Christians are more interested in physical healing rather than spiritual healing. To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. The carnal mind was never designed to reign. It wrecks every kingdom it possesses because it is self-centred rather than God centred. A man with the mind of God no longer wants to please himself, has nowhere for his ambitions to go or any great purpose he wants to complete. He only has one love, hope and desire which is to do the will of God. This won’t happen without a struggle.
God is speaking, but there is a secret to hearing His voice. He will not shout louder than the bubble and noise around or other voices which glamour to be heard. No, He waits until the other voices are stilled and you have put away your own strivings and desires and the multitude have died away. Only then will you hear His voice in the quietness: “Be still and know that I am God” When He speaks, it is revolutionary. He does not help you decide between 2 or 3 options already in your mind, for He does not build on old foundations you have already lay, but rather throws down every old thought and speaks anew after His own order.
Following do’s and don’ts is hard enough, but probably impossible until you understand the purpose and reason of God. Once you know the goal, the reward and how the sacrifices and sufferings will get you there, it is much easier to resist temptation. The church has failed to teach the plan and purpose of God. Instead we are misled to believe being ‘saved’ is the goal and once we die, or Jesus returns, we will all get our reward up in heaven regardless of our progress in this life. No wonder most Christians hardly change or progress in their walk when most have no idea of the truth. If they only knew that salvation was only the beginning and there is much more value to obtain through striving, suffering and repenting since it’s only as we become like Jesus that we can hope to rule with Him and be useful when He comes.
Then we will say “Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.” Then we will lay aside every hindering weight and sin which so easily besets us, while we run with patience the race before us. “Flee also from youthful lusts, which war against the soul, but follow righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” Do not seek the riches of this world nor its amusements for these belong to the world, but seek the things of God which never fade. Only those who do the will of God will reign with Jesus
We must stop listening to the purposeless teachings of misnamed theologians who proclaim God has no purpose. A God who according to their own gospel was tricked and outwitted in the Garden of Eden by a vastly inferior creature who by sinister cunning lay waste His eternal design. Instead He was forced to come up with His plan B in which He could only rescue a tiny remnant, while Satan claimed 99% of the spoils. How sad Christians unthinkingly believe this!
Let us instead set our hearts and minds solely on doing the will of God. Let us thrive to run our race to the end, so we might obtain the prize which will never fade. Let us never rest until we truly overcome every hindrance, every sin, the world and even ourselves. Let us wake up to the truth; start listening to God and show our faith through our actions and obedience. Remember God will never be in debt to anyone and will always repay our efforts and sacrifices a hundred or a thousand fold.
