Introduction
As we discovered in our study entitled ‘What is The Kingdom of God”, God originally established Himself as King of Israel, but the people demanded their own earthly king to the displeasure of Samuel (1 Sam 8:4-22) due to the exactions a monarch would make upon the people. However, God granted their request so they would learn their mistake and realise how much better off they were when God was their direct King and Ruler. Even so, the monarch remained the representative of God (1 Sam 10:1; 13:14; 2 Sam 5:2; 2 Kings 9:6; 1 Chr 29:22-23; Ps 2:2,7; 20:6) and as often recorded in scripture, when the monarch displeased God, another monarch was raised up.
David Promised he Would Never Cease to have a Descendant on His Throne, Ruling over Israel
After Saul had displeased God, God chose David to succeed him. After David had proved himself faithful and a man after God’s own heart, God made an unconditional promise to King David. David would never cease to have a descendant on the Throne, ruling over Israel.
“And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.” (2 Sam 7:12-16)
“The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.” (Ps 132:11)
“My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him. His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven. If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.” (Ps 89:28-37)
“Then will I establish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel.” (2 Cor 7:18)
David’s Descendants to Rule over the Kingdom of God
Despite King David having died almost 400 years earlier, Jeremiah was moved by God to reconfirm the promise made to him that his descendants would continue to sit on the throne and rule over the House of Israel forever.
“For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel; Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually. And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me…Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.” (Jer 33:17-22; 25-26)
“And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee: But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.” (1 Chr 17:11-14)
“And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.” (1 Chr 28:5)
Last of King David’s Descendants Ever Recorded as Ruling in Judah Died in 599 BC
It is especially interesting to note Jeremiah uses the plural “descendants” (Jer 33) at this time, meaning there were to be multiple more descendants to sit upon his throne and rule over the Kingdom. However, at the time of this promise, King Zedekiah was on the throne and according to the bible and history, he proved to be the last of King David’s descendants to rule over Judea after all his sons were killed in 587BC and he himself died some time later.
“And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes: he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah. Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him in chains, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death.” (Jer 52:10-11)
While Jehoiachin (son of King Jehoiakim) was still alive after King Zedekiah died, he was never anointed, nor ruled Judah, because he had been cursed earlier and as a result, none of his father’s descendants were ever to sit on the throne.
“Therefore thus saith the LORD of Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost. And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not. Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words.” (Jer 36:30-32)
Is Jesus Now Sitting on King David’s Throne in Heaven?
As King Zedekiah was the last ever recorded King of Judea, many Christians have been taught that Jesus sat on the Throne of David when He ascended to heaven in fulfilment of God’s promise to Kind David that he would never cease to have one of his descendants sitting on his throne. However, this would leave an impossible gap of over 600 years with no King or descendant of David’s sitting on the throne. According to God’s promise, there was no possibility of there being any gap and there were to be more of King David’s descendants to rule after King Zedekiah’s death.
Nor is there any scripture which teaches the literal or physical throne somehow being transferred to heaven, after King Zedekiah died and according to the following scriptures Jesus is not on the throne of David at this time, but sitting at the right hand of God on God’s Throne.
“So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.” (Mark 16:19)
“Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;” (Heb 8:1)
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Heb 12:2)
“To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne” (Rev 3:21)
The bible also clearly states Jesus isn’t ruling Israel at this time which was the second part of God’s promise to King David. This is only to occur after His second coming.
“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.” (Gen 49:10)
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land. In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness….Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.” (Jer 33:14-16; 25-26)
“I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed…And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.” (Dan 7:13-14 & 27)
“And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.” (Zech 14:6-9)
“And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” (Luke 1:30-33)
“For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Until I make thy foes thy footstool. Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.” (Acts 2:25-36)
“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” (Rev 11:15)
Accordingly, since God always keeps His promises, there must have been another line of King David’s descendants ruling in another place just as God promised.
God Keeps His Promise to David
We know King Zedekiah had daughters and under God’s Law, they could receive the family inheritance and also be included in the royal line of succession.
“Then came the daughters of Zelophehad…of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph…And they stood before Moses…saying, Our father died in the wilderness…and had no sons. Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father. And Moses brought their cause before the LORD. And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them. And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter. (Num 27:1-8).
This was a concept unheard of in all other empires where only a male heir was able to succeed to the throne. This is probably why the Babylonian King allowed Jeremiah and the King’s daughters to leave and it was to Tahphanes in Egypt where he took them and after which we never hear from them again in the Bible.
“Even men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah. So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even to Tahpanhes. (Jer 43:6-7)
Promise the Royal Line would be Replanted, Blessed and Continue in Another Land
The removal of King Zedekiah (“the highest branch of the high cedar”) and his sons (“the top of his young twigs”) “into a land of traffick…a city of merchants” (Babylon) was prophesied by Ezekiel.
“And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable unto the house of Israel; And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came unto Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar: He cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants…” (Eze 17:1-4)
In the Bible, the cedar was an analogy of the royal house, with the “upmost shoots” referring to the King’s family. With the prophesy referring to the Babylonian invasion of Jerusalem at the time of King Zedekiah, the breaking off of the “tender sprig” could only refer to a King’s daughter, who was to be taken and “planted” in a new land where she would bear much fruit and become a splendid cedar or Royal House again.
“Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also take of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon an high mountain and eminent: In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell. And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it.” (Eze 17:1-24)
The wonderful fulfilment of this promise can be seen in the historical accounts of what happened next and where Jeremiah, Baruch and the King’s daughters eventually ended up. According to Irish and Welsh historical records; monumental inscriptions; ancient poems and traditions (Annals of the Four Masters) and in fulfilment of prophecy (Eze 17) a Hebrew prophet named Ollam Folla (or Jeremiah) and his scribe Baruch arrived in Ireland from Egypt (Jer 1:7-19, 43:6,7, 44:14-28) around 583 BC, having escaped the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. They came with a very important 'stone' and a Hebrew Princess named Tea Tephi or Tamar Tephi (the Tender Twig of Eze 17) who was one of King Zedekiah's daughters. Tea Tephi later married the Irish King Eochaidh, ensuring the monarchy continued after King Zedekiah's death in 599 BC (Jer 52:10-11). Genealogies of the British Royal family have proved their ancestry goes back through this line to King David.
This is further proven by the many British customs, traditions, symbols, emblems, ceremonies and laws of succession (Num 27:8) which are shared with the Kings of Israel detailed in the bible. One example being the Israelites custom to crown their Kings on or by one particular stone (2 Kings 11:14 and 23:3) and the people shout “God save the King” (1 Sam 10:24; 2 Sam 16:16; 2 Kings 11:12). This is still our custom today with all the Kings and Queens of Great Britain (Ireland, Scotland, England) being crowned upon the same stone for 2500 yrs dating back to 583 BC when Tea Tephi married the Irish King Eochaidh. Edward the First had a coronation chair built in 1296 AD to accommodate this stone which still sits in Westminster Abbey today, with Queen Elizabeth II crowned on it in 1953. In fact, if you watch the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II you will be amazed to see almost the entire ceremony following the exact same traditions as recorded in the bible when the Israelite Kings were crowned. And yes they shouted “God save the Queen” just like our forefathers before us. This stone the English call “Jacob's Pillow” with its battered surface, large crack and two iron rings attached almost worn through, all bear witness to its long migrations. Wear which must have occurred long before 583 BC during Israel's long wanderings in the desert since historians know it’s only been moved 3 times since then, which is in fulfilment of the prophecy that the throne of David would be overturned 3 times (Eze 21:25-27). Israel to Ireland in 583 BC; Ireland to Scotland in 506 AD and lastly Scotland to England in 1603 AD where it will remain “until he come whose right it is; and I will give it Him” when Christ comes to sit upon the throne of David (Luke 1: 31-33).
It was Jeremiah’s Amazing Commission
It was Jeremiah who was given the commission by God to root out, overthrow and destroy, before planting and rebuilding.
“See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.” (Jer 1:10)
This fits exactly with Ezekiel’s prophecy and we know he certainly warned of and saw the overthrow and destruction of Judah. What the bible doesn’t cover was how he fulfilled the last part of his calling to plant and build. It is highly probable he was doing just this when we last hear of him with the King’s daughters in Jer 43:6-7. Protecting and guiding the daughters as he took them to the appointed place to see their planting in a new land, so the royal family and line could be rebuild.
Israel Was to be Planted in a New Land Outside Palestine
Samuel prophesied to King David that God would provide a place for Israel and plant them so they would have a home of their own where no one would disturb them any longer. What is interesting is this was spoken after Israel had taken possession of the land of Palestine. Surely, Samuel wasn’t prompted to make this promise if they were already planted in the land he was promising or in possession of.
“Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them anymore, as beforetime, And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.” (2 Sam 7:10-11)
Ezekiel also prophesied that the House of Judah would be taken into captivity by the Babylonians and removed from the land. They would not repent from their sins and King Zedekiah had tried to make an alliance with Eygpt against Babylonia rather than call upon the Lord for help.
“He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree. And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs. There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation. It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine. Say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof. Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew. Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Say now to the rebellious house, Know ye not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and hath taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon; And hath taken of the king's seed, and made a covenant with him, and hath taken an oath of him: he hath also taken the mighty of the land: That the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand. But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered? As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die. Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons: Seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, even it will I recompense upon his own head. And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass that he hath trespassed against me. And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and ye shall know that I the LORD have spoken it. (Eze 17:5-21)
However, although the House of Judah were to be punished like the House of Israel, the Royal House of David was to be removed from Judah and taken to the land where Israel had been replanted. The “tender twig” or princess was to be replanted “in the mountain of the height of Israel” where the royal line of David could again flourish. It is interesting to note “mountain” in the bible means government or rulers. Accordingly, the King’s daughters were to be taken from the land of Judah to the place where Israel had been replanted long before and joined together with the rulers of Israel.
And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it.” (Eze 17:22-24)
Summary
When reviewing all the above evidence and studying all the promises God made to Israel and prophesies concerning their future, it becomes clear that it is the Anglo-Saxon-Celtic people who are modern day Israel. Continuing to be ruled by King David’s descendants just as God promised. Accordingly, it is Queen Elizabeth II who sits upon the throne of David. Awaiting the return of Jesus Christ. This can all be proven by facts, based on the fulfilment in our history of every mark the prophets of the bible wrote Israel would be identified by in the future and is also confirmed by archaeological findings, historical records, state documents (i.e. Scottish Declaration of Independence signed at Arbroath in 1320) and our people sharing with the Israelites the same racial characteristics (i.e. appearance), language (derived from Hebrew), names, traits, customs, traditions, emblems and heraldry etc.
It is amazing how God fulfils all His promises and keeps His Word exactly!
