Who are the Gentiles
Introduction
Many Christian churches today teach the world is divided into two main groups - ‘Jews’ and Gentiles. This belief is built on the premise the ‘Jews’ represent all Israelites and the word ‘Gentile’ simply refers to anyone who is a ‘non-Jew’. They further equate the modern day ‘Jews’ as being the descendants of the biblical Israelites and therefore transfer all God’s promises made to Israel to them. Since they are exclusively God’s chosen people, the rest of us ‘gentiles’ are forced to accept and excuse their blasphemies, intolerance and violence toward other people.
Of course, Western politicians have also accepted these same ideas made popular by Zionists like Theodor Herzl early in the 19th century as pressure was applied worldwide by influential Jews in an effort to secure Palestine for themselves. It is sad our politicians and church leaders did not take the time to study the facts, instead simply believing the Zionist claims without question. They certainly never asked for any evidence which would substantiate their claims of descent. Instead they assumed that since they called themselves ‘Jews’, then they must be the descendants of the biblical Israelites and therefore entitled to the promised land. It’s a shame they forgot the words of Jesus who in both John 8 and in Revelation, warned us about “the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan” (Rev 2:9).
As a result true Israelites have had their rightful inheritance taken from them by a people whose ancestors never lived in Palestine. This is because the majority of modern day ‘Jews’ are not descended from the biblical Israelites at all, but are mere converts of the pagan religion of Judaism. Therefore, they are not God’s chosen people and certainly have no right to claim any of His promises, because the promises were never made to the converts of Judaism. Rather the promises were made to the racial descendants of Jacob through the line of Isaac only (including those who put their faith in Jesus Christ). Until this is rectified, the violence and bloodshed in the Middle East will continue.
To understand this more fully, we must remember the term ‘Jew’, in its biblical sense is a racial label referring to a “descendant of Judah” (Strong’s Concordance) and “One belonging to the tribe or to the Kingdom of Judah” (Westminster Dictionary of the Bible). However, in modern times its meaning has been changed into a mere religious one, referring to any convert of Judaism. Enabling many different nationalities who were never descendants of Abraham through the line of Isaac and Jacob (Israel) to claim themselves to be ‘Jews’ who are not.
The ‘Jews’ themselves understand the difference and state that “Strictly speaking it is incorrect to call an Ancient Israelite a 'Jew' or to call a contemporary Jew an Israelite or a Hebrew" (1980 Jewish Almanac, article entitled "A brief History of the Terms for Jew" pg.3). Maybe the best definition of the term ‘Jew’ in its modern context rather than its true biblical meaning is best summed up by the modern Israeli State government itself who state “The term Israelite is purely biblical. An Israeli is a citizen of Israel, regardless of religion. A Jew is a person anywhere in the world born to a Jewish mother, or converted to Judaism, who is thus identified as a member of the Jewish people or religion.” (Information Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jerusalem, February 1998).
Accordingly, the Jewish authorities agree that the word ‘Jew’ now refers to a person's religion, not their race or ethnic background as it does in the bible. This is why there are ‘Jews’ of every race, because the modern definition of a ‘Jew’ does not denote race as the original Hebrew word does in the bible. This response is perfectly in accordance with the Halakha (Jewish Law) which also defines a ‘Jew’ as any person, anywhere in the world, who is born to a Jewish mother or who converts to Judaism themselves. Converting to Judaism makes one not only a member of the religion of Judaism, but also "a member of the Jewish people" they say. This clearly demonstrates that according to Halakha, the word "Jew" refers to a person's religion, not their race or ethnic background.
Of course, there are some true ‘Jews’ who are descended from the tribe of Judah, however they are only small in number and are not the sole representatives of the biblical Israelites. True ‘jews’ only represent a very small minority of Israelites because the tribe of Judah was only 1 of 13 tribes, meaning the vast majority of Israelites come from the other 12 tribes and are not ‘Jews’. Accordingly, we should only identify Israel with those people who are the true descendants of the biblical Israelites and who fulfil every mark and promise the prophets of the bible wrote Israel would be identified by in the future.

The True Meaning of Gentiles
In regard to the term ‘gentile’, it’s essential we remember the bible was originally written in ancient Hebrew and Greek and while translators have no doubt done their best, foreign languages often lose the strength of their meaning through translation. The meaning of many words also completely changes over time creating even more confusion as we will soon uncover. Accordingly, let’s review the origin and original meaning of the word ‘gentile’ and therefore determine what it actually means.
According to anthropology, the term ‘gentile’ comes from the Latin word ‘gentilis’ and originally meant “of a family or nation, of the same clan” (Oxford Dictionary). This word itself comes from the Latin root word ‘gēns’ and also means “clan, tribe”. Of course, the Latin word ‘gentile’ is not even found in the original text, but was translated from the Greek word ‘ethnos’. A word which also primarily means “a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe” (Strong’s Concordance). A "people of the same race or nationality who share a distinctive culture" (thefreedictionary.com) and “An ethnic group…nation, people, caste, tribe” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). The ultimate Greek Lexicon, Liddel & Scott, lists many references to Greek classical literature and Biblical writings as well and defines ‘ethnos’ as a "number of people living together, company, body of men; particular tribe; a nation, a people; a caste, a tribe; a guild; a relation." (p.480)
The Greek word ‘ethnos’ happens to be where we got our own English word ‘ethnic’ from too, which most of us understand to mean “of or relating to large groups of people classed according to common racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin or background” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).
Certainly, in accordance with the original Greek and Latin words, gentile cannot refer to a ‘non-Jew’ which includes almost the entire world population as we have been taught. Nor can it mean all others when it clearly excludes all others i.e. limited to a certain ethnic group. The word ‘gentile’ is therefore an exclusive term, only referring to a specific group of related people, who share the same culture, rather than a general term referring to any race or culture who happen not to be ‘Jews’. In other words, gentile is not a general term which refers to all races and nationalities of the world who are ‘non Jewish’, but refers only to a specific group of people of the same race.
This raises the question. Who were Paul and others specifically writing and referring to in the New Testament when they addressed so many of their letters to the ‘gentiles’?
Who are the Gentiles?
While the term ‘gentile’ (translated from the Greek word "ethnos") can mean a ‘non-Jew’, it does not necessarily mean ‘non Israelite’ for two of the reasons discussed above. Firstly, it is an exclusive term referring specifically to “a race (as of the same habit), i.e. a tribe” (Strong’s Concordance) and secondly, while all true Jews (descendants of the tribe of Judah) are Israelites; most Israelites are not Jews, since the tribe of Judah is only one of 13 tribes. Most confusion would be eliminated if Christians stopped using the term gentile or ‘non-Jew’ as if it also meant ‘non Israelite’, when it clearly need not. Accordingly, an Israelite can be both a ‘non-Jew’ and a gentile, and yet still be an Israelite by race.
But the question remains. Did Israel become lost and known as gentiles and if so, how? There are actually many scriptures, including the words of Christ Himself which confirm that Israel had become lost. Lost to their own identity and lost to the world. Let’s have a brief look at Israel’s history and how they came to end up in this state and become known as gentiles.
The nation of Israel split into two separate nations (Israel and Judah) after King Solomon’s death (1 Kings 12). The House of Israel (10 Tribes in Northern Palestine) after being taken captive by the Assyrians around 721 BC is said to have never returned to Palestine, but migrated north west to the land they would be replanted in fulfilment of the words Samuel prophesied to King David (2 Sam 7:10-11). God is said to have removed all Israel (2 Kings 17:18) from His presence (i.e. removed them from Palestine) and the bible doesn’t mention anyone returning accept one priest (2 Kings 17:23-28). This is further confirmed in 2 Esdras 13:40-45 stating when the House of Israel was captive in Assyria, they took “counsel among themselves, that they would leave the multitudes of the heathen, and go forth into a further country, where never mankind dwelt”.
Josephus the renown ancient Jewish historian, wrote in his Antiquities of the Jews, Book 2, Chapter 5, v2 that out of all the “entire body of Israel” (12 tribes), only 2 tribes remained in Asia and Europe subject to the Romans since the “ten tribes were beyond Euphrates till now” and were an “immense multitude, and could not be estimated by numbers”. This migration has also been confirmed by many leading historians, archaeological findings and historical records which is all in fulfilment of the prophesies and promises concerning Israel.
In due course the House of Israel lost its identity and became gentilized among the nations of Europe as they migrated toward Western Europe and eventually into Britain. Although Israel had been rejected and divorced by God in judgement for their sins, this was not to be permanent since God promised they would never cease to be a nation before Him and were to be restored at the end of their punishment (Jer 3:8-25; 31:1-37 & 50:17-20). This was made possible through the death of Christ enabling divorced and rejected Israel to be restored to the Abrahamic Covenant so in the place they were called “not my people”, they could be called ”the sons of the living God” when God promised He would make a new covenant with Israel:
“Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God” (Hos 1:10)
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.” (Jer 31:32-33)
Accordingly, Israel (the northern ten tribes) was never permanently rejected by God nor ever ceased to exist as a people or nation. Nor were they replaced by the Jews and or the church.

Now to the many verses which confirm Israel’s lost state during their punishment.
“These twelve Jesus sent out when he had charged them, saying, Go not off into the way of the nations, and into a city of Samaritans enter ye not; but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has drawn nigh.” (Matt 10:5-7).
Christ surely knew where His 'lost sheep' or lost Israelites were to be found since there is nothing hidden from Him and He also said “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” (Matt 15:24)
“For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.” (Mat 18:11) and “And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.” (Luk 15:6).
This was in confirmation of the words previously spoken through the prophets (list of verses at end) that He Himself would search for His sheep and after finding them, bring them out of the nations and look after them in their own land.
At the time of Christ, the lost Israelites had long since left Palestine as stated previously and were to be found elsewhere as confirmed by the prophet Samuel (2 Sam 7:10-11) and James (Jam 1:1). Since Christ was sending His disciples to preach to the lost Israelites, He must have told them where they were to be found which appears to have been in Britain since the Christian religion was brought directly to Britain from Jerusalem by Joseph of Arimathea and other disciples soon after, if not before the crucification. There are many proofs and certainly a great deal of tradition that the apostle Simon and later St Paul visited Britain along with others too.
“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks…The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, … neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them. And they were scattered, because there is no shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered…For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. … I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment. … And I will set up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. … Thus shall they know that I the LORD their God am with them, and that they, even the house of Israel, are my people, saith the Lord GOD.” (Eze 34: 2-31).
“And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace.” (1Ki 22:17)
“My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place.” (Jer 50:6)
“Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.” (Jer 50:17)
“I will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of thee; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men.” (Mic 2:12)
